The Story

In 1949, my father, Holger Hansen, began a lifelong collaboration with Danish designer Hans J. Wegner. At that time, our little family-owned business, Carl Hansen & Søn, was making bespoke furniture that was popular in Denmark but unknown to the international design community. Luckily, Kold Christensen, the company’s sales manager, was keeping a close eye on the new breed of Danish designers emerging in the 1940s. He was particularly impressed by the work of Hans J. Wegner, who was an acclaimed designer but was relatively unknown outside certain circles. My father and Christensen approached Wegner in the late 1940s and this was the beginning of a new design era for Carl Hansen & Søn.

Hans Jørgensen Wegner(April 2, 1914 – January 26, 2007) was a Danish furniture designer.His work, along with a concerted effort from several of his manufacturers,contributed to the international popularity of mid-centuryDanish design. His style is often described as Organic Functionality, amodernistschool with emphasis on functionality. This school of thought arose primarily in Scandinavian countries with contributions by Poul Henningsen,Alvar Aalto, andArne Jacobsen.Wegner has been referred to as the "King of Chairs" for his proliferated work designing seating.In his lifetime he designed over 500 different chairs, over 100 of which were put into mass production and many of which have become recognizable design icons.
